Now U.S. President Trump says he wants it back, claiming it’s run by China — something China disputes. Panama last month celebrated the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal, which in its day was one of the most expensive and dangerous infrastructure endeavors ever undertaken. The American construction entwined newly independent Panama and the United States for much of the 20th century.
