The United States built the Panama Canal in the early 20th century, handed it over to Panama in 1999. Now U.S. President Trump says he wants it back, claiming it’s run by China — something China disputes. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Mao Ning has said that China does not take part in managing or operating the canal. Panama last month celebrated the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal, which in its day was one of the most expensive and dangerous infrastructure endeavors ever undertaken. The American construction entwined newly independent Panama and the United States for much of the 20th century.
