State of emergency as Peru’s Amazon burns

World Today

Wildfires in Peru have left at least 16 people dead in the past three months. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Peru declared a state of emergency in three Amazon regions: Amazonas, San Martín and Ucayali. Thousands of hectares have been burned. Experts say a drought and the effects of climate change have intensified the conditions.
