California to ban “legacy admissions” for colleges

World Today

California became the first state in the U.S. to ban “legacy admissions” in higher education, a policy among certain private institutions that gives preferential treatment to the children of wealthy donors and former alumni.

The decision comes after a landmark Supreme Court decision last year that banned affirmative action — which had for years allowed for a better representation of disadvantaged students of color in higher education.
