With less than two months before the FIFA World Cup kicks off, many of Rio de Janeiro’s poorest citizens are staging an alternative tournament. The “People’s Cup” is a football championship organized to protest the government’s forced evictions of slum dwellers to clean up neighborhoods for the FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
This tournament they say, will shed light on demolitions and removals. Most of the players in this tournament – women and men – have lost their homes, or fear they will lose them. CCTV’s Lucrecia Franco has more.
