World Cup: Fans still coming to terms with the defeat of Spain

World Today

In Rio De Janeiro, fans are still coming to grips with the fact that the defending champions are finished in the tournament — having scored just one goal across two games.

After surrendering a total of six goals in those three tournament triumphs, Spain conceded seven goals in consecutive losses to the Netherlands and Chile.

Spain becomes the latest defending World Cup champion to fail to advance past the group stage. In 2010, defending champion Italy left South Africa after a loss and two draws in the group stage.

In 2002, defending champion France suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Senegal in its opener and would head home after another loss and draw.
