Dominican Republic immigration policy impact on Haitians

Insight

The Caribbean island of Hispaniola is divided into two sovereign countries: Dominican Republic and Haiti. Haiti has a history of extreme poverty and a lack of infrastructure and development. Combine that with the 2010 earthquake that destroyed what little progress they had achieved. For decades, Haitians have been illegally crossing the border into the Dominican Republic in search of work and basic survival. Recently, the Dominican Republic’s government decided to put a stop to it and implemented a plan to legalize some of the undocumented Haitians and push others back to their home nation. It’s causing a migration crisis between the two countries. CCTV America’s Nitza Soledad Perez filed the report.
