Despite progress, widespread hunger persists

Insight

Some encouraging news on the state of global hunger from the U.S.-based International Food Policy Research Institute.

It released its yearly “Global Hunger Index” this month, finding a 27 percent decrease in the level of hunger in developing countries since the year 2000. It also highlights what it calls an “unheralded achievement” of the past 50 years: an end to “calamitous” famines, those that kill more than one million people.

But for all the progress, the report says serious challenges remain-especially in countries engaged in armed conflict. A case in point is Nigeria, where an insurgency by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has displaced millions of citizens. CCTV America’s Sophia Adengo has our report.
