A 2015 dam break in Brazil that covered villages in toxic mud

Three years ago, a dam filled with mining waste burst in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The date was November 5, 2015. The dam collapse created a trail of toxic mud that spanned hundreds of kilometers. Over a thousand residents were displaced and have not yet returned.

At the time, President Dilma Rousseff called it “The worst environmental disaster Brazil has ever seen.”

The companies responsible and the people affected are still coping with the aftermath of the tragedy.
