Migrants face possible detention if they’re caught without paperwork

Central American migrants who make it as far as Mexico’s border town of Tapachula are relatively safe, but tread with caution beyond town limits, where migration authorities and national guard patrols are on the lookout.

Migrating through Mexico without a humanitarian visa is no longer permitted, and travelers found doing so end up in migration jail.
