California transitions to an endemic approach to the virus

The U.S. state of California surpassed nine million coronavirus cases, equal to nearly one in four residents.

But given the decline in transmission rates and increased vaccinations, California became the first state to officially move from a pandemic approach to the virus toward an endemic one.

Officials say COVID-19 will now be treated as a manageable risk, instead of an emergency. In the meantime, the nation’s largest county, Los Angeles, has lifted its indoor mask rules and is now considering a proposal to end vaccination requirement for entering bars, restaurants, gyms and other indoor facilities.
