Mexico struggles to deal with latest wave of violence

Fear spread among hundreds of tourists, who ran in panic after loud bangs were heard at the Cancun International Airport. Officials sounded a red alert and flights were grounded for nearly three hours at one of Latin America’s busiest airports. It was a false alarm.

Gunmen opened fire killing 20 people attending a rooster fight in the town of Zinapecuaro, in the western state of Michoacan. It’s a place where rival criminal groups battle each other.

In Mexico, residents in several states — including the well-known tourist zones of Cancun — are expressing deep concerns over rising violence.
