But for the pioneers of the metaverse, this is just the start of a revolution that could permeate every aspect of both professional and personal life.
And while the benefits are touted as endless, keeping virtual and augmented realities safe for its users requires careful policing.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has put the metaverse concept – an entire virtual reality ecosystem for living and working – on the global agenda changing Facebook’s company name to Meta, investing billions of dollars in a whole range of virtual and augmented reality ventures, and opening a store earlier this month to market them.
