The first U.S. Republican presidential primary debate is in the books.

Eight candidates for the party’s nomination duked it out Wednesday night on a stage in the state of Wisconsin.

The event was marked by some fiery exchanges, a political novice who drew a lot of attention and by the clear leader in the Republican field who wasn’t there.
