Social welfare program celebrates 20 years in Brazil

On October 20, Brazil marked 20 years since its iconic social welfare program known as Bolsa Familia was created. It pays a cash benefit each month to low-income families that fulfill certain conditions, such as enrolling and keeping their children in school.

The government says the program has lifted some three million recipients out of poverty so far this year alone while studies have documented other positive health and welfare impacts on families.
