The brutal 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a Black teenager visiting Sumner, Mississippi from Chicago, sparked global condemnation and disgust.

The acquittal of two white men in the trial that followed, caused further shock and anger, becoming a flashpoint in the civil rights movement.

Recent moves by the Sumner community to recognize its history offers a more positive path forward in Mississippi and elsewhere.
