CELAC meeting comes to a close

World Today

The 8th summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States has concluded in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Representatives from the group’s 33 member countries failed to reach a unified stance regarding the Gaza conflict.

Outgoing CELAC coordinator Ambassador Douglas Slater told the closing press conference that the summit failed to reach a common position after eight members did not agree with the proposed position on the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

He stressed that unanimity must be achieved before a CELAC position is declared.
