Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery, in 1888.

It is estimated that between the 16th and 19th centuries, approximately four million Africans were enslaved and forcibly transported to the country, primarily to work in sugar cane fields and gold mines.

Currently, there is a growing call for the Black population to be compensated for the violation of their rights and to acknowledge the value of their labor, though forced, in Brazil’s development.
