Fears that the coronavirus could be brought back into China has led to the local government in Guangzhou to implement a number of measures, like surveillance and mandatory testing, along with an additional quarantine for African nationals – even if they had not left China.
Over time, videos of mistreatment of Africans in the city have surfaced. Stories of evictions and rejections from restaurants have caused outrage online and in diplomatic circles.
But some members of Guangzhou’s African community are volunteering within the system, helping people who have been impacted by the virus and subsequent shutdowns.
CGTN talked with an Angolan student, who volunteered at a Guangzhou hotel designated for quarantine. Take a listen to why he is volunteering and how he feels about people in the city.
