Pedro Castillo, a socialist and the son of peasant farmers, took office as Peru’s new president.
After rising from obscurity to narrowly beat his right-wing rival, Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of jailed ex-president Alberto Fujimori, he is expected to adopt moderate left-wing policies.
CGTN’s Dan Collyns reports this could be part of a growing trend in the region.
