The United States is hosting the Summit of the Americas for the first time since the very first one, back in 1994.
But this meeting has been marked by the absences. Mexican president – and other leaders from the region – decided not to show. It was a protest against the US decision to not invite countries they deem authoritarian – Cuba, Venezuela e Nicaragua.
Ediz Tiyansan has more from Los Angeles.
- Gloria La Riva is Coordinator of the Cuba and Venezuela Solidarity Committee.
- Gustavo Ribeiro is founder and editor-in-chief of the Brazilian Report.
- Arthur Estopinan is the president of the Estopinan Group.
- Rafael Bernal is a staff writer for the political publication The Hill.
As some leaders from the Americas gather to meet to discuss immigration and many other issues at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, several presidents from “migrant-sending and transit countries” will not be attending.
