The French Interior Ministry says last week’s protests resulted in 5,000 vehicles torched, more than a thousand buildings damaged and over 3,000 arrests.

Protests turned violent in Paris and cities across France after a 17-year-old boy of Algerian descent was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop. The shooting was recorded on video.

The United Nations has called on France to address the country’s deep issues of racism and discrimination in law enforcement.
